Halászi - A small village considered the gateway to Szigetköz

One of the favourite destinations for nature lovers in Hungary is the Szigetköz, a small town in the hug of the Big- and Moson-Danube, which was built up by the Danube from its alluvium. It is also Hungary's largest island, covering an area of 375 km2. Attractions in and around Halászi - Szigetköz programme opportunities

Not far from Mosonmagyaróvár, only 4 kilometres away, is the small village of Halászi, also known as the gateway to the Szigetköz. If you want to discover the special wild world of Szigetköz, it is worth starting from here, as this is where you enter the world of the "thousand islands". The settlement of Halászi has been an important crossing point since ancient times, as the road connecting Mosonmagyaróvár and Győr crosses the Danube here. The area is a justly famous and popular tourist destination, as it has a unique natural world, formed by the Danube along its banks. The settlement's attractiveness is also due to its tranquil surroundings and its proximity to the Moson-Danube. But what can you do here?

Discovering Halászi and learning about its history

It is worth starting your tour by exploring the gateway to the Szigetköz, if you are passing through. The inhabitants of the village were once fish transporters for the royal court of Magyaróvár, after they settled here and started fishing. The surrounding settlements are made up of the peasant farmers and their families who settled here, whose memory is preserved by the two surviving gable-walled baroque farmhouses, still intact. The village's history is also recalled by the monumental Reformed church, also in the New Baroque style, built by Archduchess Maria Christina during the Habsburg dynasty.
